‘Alcohol can miss me’ – Mpho Popps on his sobriety

When it comes to comedians, many assume that these entertainers’ lives are all fun and laughs behind the scenes. Although, like all humans, comedians have their fair share of personal troubles too.

The Masked Singer host Mpho Popps opened up about his own set of battles after he revealed that it has been two years since he decided to stop consuming alcohol.

Mpho told SowetanLIVE that his reason for saying no to alcohol was to see how productive he could be without the booze in his system. “I first committed to a year, and because I had the best year ever, I thought I should continue, and guess what, I had an even better year,” said the comedian.

He added, “The Mpho Popps who used to drink was skinny, and because I train now, I look much better. Like, from now on, alcohol can miss me. It’s not easy, but waking up daily with no toxins in my body is the best feeling in the world.”

Mpho also revealed to the publication, as mentioned above, that he slipped into a depressive and suicidal state during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I realised that I’ve been neglecting myself. People may know me for my stand-up comedy or presentation, but I’ve grown to be fond of myself more. I’ve been busy chasing success, being booked and busy, but simultaneously, I neglected myself.”

Mpho shared that he has since learned to pace himself, adding, “[L]ike my mother used to say: ‘Monate ga o fele (there will always be a party in the world)’ and now I know better, I’m more into wholesome life experiences.”
