The coveted and highly anticipated Met Gala is upon us, and as expected, the event boasted a star-studded guest list, consisting of some of the world’s biggest stars. Some of Africa’s superstars were in attendance, representing the continent loudly and proudly.

The Met Gala, formerly known as the Costume Institute Benefit, is regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious and glamorous fashion events. Often opting for extravagant and eloquent themes, the event has become a platform where attendees are given the chance to not only step out of the box, but to disregard the box completely, to deliver the best haute couture interpretation of the theme.

This year, attendees were given the prompt ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, with the accompanying dress code being ‘Tailored For You. Despite being at a disadvantage in terms of the familiarity with the history of the theme, as it it takes inspiration from black American culture, some of Africa’s superstars came, saw and conquered on this massie platform, and did it with the utmost confidence, class and grace.

Tyla

After pulling off one of the most memorable and jaw-dropping Met Gala debuts in 2024, all expectations were high for mzansi’s popiano princess, and of course, she ate and left no crumbs. Styled by the legendary Law Roach, the youngster showed up in a custom Jacquemus white pinstripe gown, accompanied by a matching cape.

With a lethal face card like the one Ayra Starr possesses, showing up is the only thing needed for her look to be regarded as a hit. However, the Nigerian songstress ensured not to disappoint, as she donned a custom Gaurav Gupta gown, styled by Kyle Luu.
