5FM eager to make an impact this youth month

As the annual winter season kicks in, having a warm meal to fill a growling belly is one way of making the icy cold temperatures more bearable.

Over the last few days South Africans have experienced what has been termed as one of the “coldest” weeks that our country has ever experienced. Various parts of the country have been faced with wet slippery roads and pouring rain which resulted in flooding while some provinces have even experienced snow.

While the splendour of seeing parts of our country covered in this white canvas is usually a sight to behold, these icy conditions are often excruciating for those less privileged.

This is why the radio broadcast station, 5FM, has taken it upon themselves by becoming the difference they wish to see by starting a lunch box drive which will see them hand out more than 50 000 meals to kids in Johannesburg.

This forms part of their CSI initiative for youth month and they are inviting celebrities, business owners, companies as well as listeners to roll up their sleeves and lend a helping hand by making a difference in the lives of those who desperately need it. It is also their way of supporting childhood development, learning potential, and nutritional security during this critical phase of life.

The initiative, which is in partnership with Rise Against Hunger Africa, will take place this Thursday, 12 June, at the SABC Auckland Park foyer, from 10h00 to 16h00.

Speaking more about the event was Masi Mdingane, Business Manager for 5FM and Good Hope FM, who said: “In a country as vibrant and resourceful as ours, no child should go hungry. The 5FM Lunchbox Drive is about more than meals — it’s about momentum. When the youth rise, the nation shifts into a higher gear.”

He added, “This campaign is a call to action, a chance to put purpose into practice. We’re proud to partner with Rise Against Hunger Africa, and we invite South Africans from all walks of life to pack, share, and show up.”

Those who hope to get involved can do so by doing the following:

  • Show up: Join us at the SABC foyer on Thursday. Come solo, bring your team, or bring your followers.
  • Share it: Snap your moments, tag 5FM and #5FMLunchboxDrive.
  • Support it: Contact them if you’d like to get your brand or business involved.

The meals will be delivered to under-resourced ECD schools on 17 June.
