As South Africa commemorates three decades of democracy, one of its most cherished musical icons, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, shares her reflections on the nation’s journey and her hopes for the music industry’s future.

Often referred to as the “Princess of Africa” Yvonne has been a prominent figure in the South African music scene for over four decades. Her career spans numerous genres including Afro-pop and mbaqanga.

In an exclusive interview with IOL, the legendary musician shared insights into her journey and her reflections on South Africa’s 30 years of democracy. With a mix of regret and hope, she addressed both the progress made and the challenges that still persist.

Reflecting on the significance of 30 years of democracy, Yvonne remarked, “30 years of democracy, it’s not a child’s play. It has been a long walk to this freedom, and I always say it’s important that we embrace and think about what our forefathers wanted for us.”

She drew attention to the ongoing social issues, urging unity and a return to the spirit of community.

Despite the strides made in the past three decades, Yvonne acknowledged that the creative industry, including music, still faces obstacles.

“I want to say to the young people who want to be in the creative industry that the playing field has been levelled and I want to urge them to be anything that they want to be, especially young girls. I know some have gone to school, you know to study for music and to thrive in the creative industry.”

She emphasised the need for support from both corporate entities and the government, highlighting the importance of empowerment over handouts.

“From big corporations to the government, all I say is that the people don’t want handouts, people want a hand up. Levelling the playing field for them makes the environment conducive for our young people to spread their wings, just like they’re doing now.”
