Serena Williams wins her first title in three years

Grand slam champion Serena Williams won her first title in three years this past weekend. The star won the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, after defeating fellow American Jessica Pegula. This is also her first win since welcoming her daughter, Olympia, in 2017.

Serena expressed her excitement sharing in part, “Oh, it feels good! It’s been a long time. I think you could see the relief on my face. It’s pretty satisfying just to get a win in the final. That was really important for me, and I just want to build on it. It’s just a step towards the next goal.”

Serena also announced that she’d be donating her cash prize towards helping the victims of the Australian bushfires. She shared in part, “For me it’s super – I’ve been playing Australia for over 20 years, and it’s been so hard for me to see everything happening in Australia with all the fires and everything. People have lost their homes, and so much has happened. I decided for the beginning that for every game I play I’ll donate a dress, and I’ll also donate all my prize money – so thank you guys.”

Serena Williams wins her first title in three years. Congratulations!
