A new global study has ranked Johannesburg as the best city in South Africa for families, with two other local metros also earning places among the world’s top 50.

According to Good Things Guy, the ranking, compiled by Compare the Market AU, assessed cities worldwide to determine the best places to raise children in 2026. Researchers analysed nine key indicators, including safety, cost of living, education investment, access to green space, vaccination rates and overall wellbeing.

Out of roughly 15,000 cities globally, just 50 made the final list. Three of them are in South Africa.

Leading the local rankings is Johannesburg, which placed 41st overall with an index score of 3.307. The city’s performance reflects several lifestyle factors that appeal to families, including a wide range of child-friendly activities and access to outdoor spaces.
According to the study, Johannesburg offers around 126 activities for children, helping boost its family-friendly score. South Africa’s relatively strong investment in education also contributed to the result, with the country allocating about 6% of GDP to education, one of the highest shares among the countries analysed.

Two other South African metros also featured in the global ranking. Cape Town and Durban both secured places within the top 50, highlighting the country’s appeal as a destination where families can enjoy a balance of lifestyle, community and outdoor living.
While South African cities face ongoing urban challenges, the ranking suggests the country continues to offer a family lifestyle that blends nature, culture and opportunity. For many residents, that combination remains one of the country’s greatest strengths.
