Teen’s “We Are the Fire” Speech Ignites Global Attention Amid Unrest in Nepal

A video of Abiskar Raut, head boy of Holy Bell School in Nepal, has struck a chord online after resurfacing during a wave of political protests. In the clip, originally from his school’s annual programme, he speaks passionately about corruption, unemployment, and the role of young people in shaping the nation.

What He Said

Abiskar Raut opens with a vision: a “new Nepal” born from hope and dedication. He reflects on the promise of honesty, hard work, and contribution that citizens owe their country. Yet he says they find themselves trapped in “chains of unemployment” and tangled in “selfish games” by those in power. He ends with a salute to youth activism, asking who will speak out if they do not and declaring that they are “the fire that will burn away the darkness.”

Context Around the Speech

The clip has regained attention as Nepal faces mass protests triggered by the government’s ban of 26 social media platforms, including major ones like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The move angered many who saw it as suppression of free expression. Violence has erupted, leaving at least 19 people dead amid clashes with security forces. These events led to the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

Global Resonance and Why It Matters

Though Abiskar’s speech was not new, its reemergence has coincided with widespread unrest. It underscores how voices of young citizens can become symbolic when political tension is high. The speech is being shared widely not only in Nepal but also in other countries where young people are speaking out.
