5 minutes with TLT

TLT duo Phethego Ltech Makanyane and Vusi Troublle Rantlha chat to us about their music careers, and new single featuring Thabsie, Maizuzu. By Kwanele Mathebula

Phethego Ltech Makanyane: I grew up in Katlehong, East of Johannesburg. Like any other kid in the ghetto, I played soccer and had hopes of one day becoming a soccer star. When I wasn’t playing soccer, I spent time alone mimicking other people’s songs and recording them on cassettes. That is how I fell in love with music.

Vusi Troublle Rantlha: I grew up in KwaThema, East of Johannesburg. From a young age, I liked entertaining people. When I was in high school, I then began competing in rap battle competitions. I later moved to Katlehong where I met Ltech and we formed our duo, TimeLessTalent (TLT).

Our single with Thabsie is a dream come true. We’ve always wanted to feature her on a song, but we took our time because we wanted it to be the right one. Being the incredible star she is, we wanted to make sure that the song was perfect for all of us. So, once we had an idea, we recorded the song and sent it to her. Luckily, she liked it and immediately recorded her part, giving birth to Maizuzu.

We’re very proud of our single. Beside the fact that this song is an instant hit, we also wanted to drive a certain message across. This is why we decided to shed some light on long-distance relationships on this record. We wanted to create a song that people in long-distance relationships could relate to. Hopefully, it will become their anthem.

Our career highlights include being signed by Raplyf Records. This happened when we were starting to lose faith in music. We also performed on the SAMA 24 main stage, and opened for American rapper J. Cole when he was in the country. Another huge moment was reaching a million views on the YouTube music video of our previous single, Mbube.
