5 minutes with DJ SPHEctacula

by Bongiwe Tshiqi

Siphesihle Ngwenya, popularly known as DJ SPHEctacula, chats to us about being business-minded.

1.When I was a kid, the radio was my best friend. I have always wanted to be on radio and to play music for the masses. The stage of radio fascinated me. I used to make my own mix tapes and play them. I am blessed that I am doing what I have always wanted to do. I am living my dream.

2. Taking an alternative career path can be tricky. Elders still think that being a DJ is not a sustainable career. I want to change that mindset and lead by example. I had to jump through many hoops to be taken seriously.

3. I love creating opportunities for young people that want to be DJs.

That is why DJ Naves and I hosted a reality TV show called 1’s and 2’s on SABC 1. This enabled an aspiring DJ to win a recording deal, gear and equipment. Through the show, we wanted to show that being a DJ is hard work that should be treated as a business, not just about playing music and talking.

4. The secret to working with your best friend is respect. I respect and trust Naves, and that is why we are such a strong team. We share the same vision and understand our strengths and weakness. We are both doing what we love and always have fun together.

5. I can’t wait to get paid for playing music and partying on the Oh Ship 2016 cruise. The concept of partying on a ship fascinates me because most of us think it’s a far-fetched. But, it’s actually not. This concept has opened up our horizon, and life just got a lot better.
