No regrets as Poirier nears UFC exit

After nearly two decades of pushing forward in the cage, UFC veteran Dustin Poirier is ready to bring his fighting career to a close — on his own terms.

The former interim lightweight champion has announced that his next appearance in the Octagon will be his last. While no opponent or venue has been officially confirmed, Poirier is widely expected to headline the UFC’s summer return to New Orleans — a fitting send-off in his home state of Louisiana.

Despite the finality of his decision, Poirier says he’s at peace with what lies ahead.

“I’m not emotional yet,” Poirier said during a training session at American Top Team in South Florida. “I’m sure waves of emotions will come. But right now, I’m confident and OK with this being my last fight.”

Poirier, 35, has seen it all inside the cage. Over the past eight years, his only losses have come against the best in the sport — Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, and Islam Makhachev. He’s also picked up two career-defining victories over Conor McGregor, cementing his place among the most respected lightweights of his era.

Though he admits he could still compete at the highest level, Poirier says continuing without a title in sight no longer appeals to him.

“I can still do this at the top level for a few more years — no doubt in my mind,” he said. “But what am I fighting for? Is it for a paycheck? I don’t want to disrespect the sport.”

For Poirier, fighting has always been about legacy, not just earning a living. After years of giving his all, he believes the responsible choice is stepping away while still healthy and able to enjoy life with his family.

“I’ve been doing this for 18, 19 years. Bleeding every week. It’s time,” he said. “I want to be able to speak clearly, work the analyst desk, be healthy for my daughter and future kids. I think it’s a responsible decision, and it’s respect to the sport.”

As one of the UFC’s most durable and beloved fighters, Poirier’s final fight will mark the end of an era — and perhaps the start of a new chapter outside the cage.
