New York Mets outfielder Jose Siri is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after tests confirmed a fractured left tibia. Siri sustained the injury during Saturday’s game against the Oakland Athletics when he fouled a pitch off his leg and had to be carted off the field.

Initial X-rays came back negative, but an MRI on Monday revealed the break. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed the news following the team’s 5-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.

“We’ve got to get more information before we know how long he’s going to be out,” said Mendoza. “But he’s going to be out for a while.”

Siri, who has been seen using crutches since the incident, remains hopeful despite the setback.

“It’s obviously disappointing,” Siri said through an interpreter. “But we’re not going to get too ahead of ourselves. I’ll get it re-evaluated within the next week. I’m a quick healer, so hopefully something good can come out of it.”

The 28-year-old was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in a trade last November. Though off to a slow start offensively this season, going just 1-for-20, Siri has made his presence felt with his speed and defensive play.

Tyrone Taylor has started in center field the past two games in Siri’s absence.
