McGregor hints at UFC return, eyes Chandler

Conor McGregor has sparked fresh speculation by expressing interest in the UFC 314 co-main event between Michael Chandler and Paddy Pimblett. However, both fighters seem more focused on their bout than any potential showdown with the former two-division champion.

McGregor (22-6) and Chandler (23-9) were once on course to fight after serving as opposing coaches on Season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter. But the matchup never materialized, with McGregor unable to finalize terms. Since then, he’s remained inactive in MMA, turning his attention to business ventures including Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC).

On Thursday, McGregor posted a video hitting mitts with the caption: “I am interested in the Chandler/Pimblett fight this weekend.”

That message made its way to both Chandler and Pimblett during UFC 314 fight week. But Chandler, who hasn’t faced McGregor despite years of build-up, downplayed the comment.

“I’m sure he’s watching,” Chandler said at the pre-fight press conference. “He’s interested, but can he put together a training camp? We don’t know. All I know is I stay active. I’m putting my ranking on the line against Paddy, and I’m going out to brave the unknown.”

Chandler pointed to his history of delivering in big fights, including bouts with Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje, and said McGregor will have to be impressed by his performance Saturday if he wants to revisit their rivalry.

Pimblett, meanwhile, acknowledged McGregor’s interest but is fully focused on the task at hand.

“I’d welcome that fight — that’s where the money is,” said Pimblett. “But I can’t look past Michael. I’ve got to beat him first. That’s all that matters.”

McGregor has not fought since suffering a leg break at UFC 264 in July 2021. Whether he returns remains to be seen, but for now, the spotlight belongs to Chandler and Pimblett.
