The United States claimed its first gold medal at the IIHF World Championship in 92 years, with a heartfelt tribute to a fallen hero, Johnny Gaudreau.

Goalie Jeremy Swayman spoke about the team’s motivation. “We did it with a purpose. Every game we built towards something special. But the biggest inspiration in the room was Johnny Gaudreau. This gold medal is for him and the legacy he’s left for USA Hockey. We felt his spirit with us all the way.”

Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew tragically passed away on 29 August 2024 after being hit by a suspected drunk driver while cycling in their hometown of Salem County, New Jersey.

Gaudreau was more than just a star player; he was a symbol of dedication. Defence man Zach Werenski, who plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets, said, “Johnny was always there for USA Hockey, even if he wasn’t in the NHL playoffs. No one deserved this gold more than him. It’s emotional but an incredible way to honour him.”

Throughout the tournament, Gaudreau’s No. 13 jersey remained in the US locker room, a constant reminder of his influence. When the USA beat Switzerland 1-0 in overtime to clinch the gold, the players carried his jersey onto the ice during the trophy presentation. Tage Thompson scored the winning goal just two minutes into overtime.

Thompson reflected, “I played with Johnny at my first Worlds in 2018, and I also faced him on the ice. He was an amazing guy, fun, passionate about hockey and a great teammate. He did so much for USA Hockey. This win is very special because of him.”

Gaudreau represented the USA five times at the World Championship and was the nation’s all-time points leader with 43 (13 goals, 30 assists). He helped the team win bronze in 2018 alongside Thompson.

Defence player Brady Skjei, from the Nashville Predators, added, “Johnny was a key player and an amazing person. Many of us knew him well. To honour him like this was incredible. I’m sure he’s watching and proud.”

Werenski and Gaudreau were teammates at the Columbus Blue Jackets during Johnny’s final NHL seasons, as well as at the 2024 World Championship. Werenski said, “I think about Johnny every time I step on the ice. His jersey hangs in Columbus, and last year’s tournament was the last time I played alongside him. He absolutely deserved this gold medal.”

The USA’s victory, ending a near-century drought, was as much about the team’s skill as it was about celebrating the memory of a player who inspired them all.
