With Islam Makhachev vacating the UFC lightweight title, the division is set for a shake-up. Justin Gaethje’s chances for a title shot appear stronger as a new champion will be crowned on June 28 at UFC 317, where Ilia Topuria faces Charles Oliveira for the vacant belt at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Before Makhachev’s exit, Gaethje (26-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) was already pushing for a title shot. He was seen as a fresh challenge for the champion. Now, with the belt up for grabs, Gaethje’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, believes Justin is next in line.
“I think Justin Gaethje’s the No. 1 contender,” Abdelaziz told MMA Junkie. “He was supposed to fight Dan Hooker, who didn’t show up. Justin stepped up, fought Rafael Fiziev at UFC 313, and should now fight the winner of the title fight. He’s ready to fight anyone, anytime, but it has to make sense.”
With the lightweight division rapidly evolving, Gaethje may face Paddy Pimblett or Arman Tsarukyan if he doesn’t get the title shot immediately. Abdelaziz isn’t worried about the opponent as long as the fight solidifies Gaethje’s status.
“Justin never picks opponents,” Abdelaziz said. “He fights anyone, anywhere. He even gave up a title shot to save International Fight Week by fighting Max Holloway. After knocking out Dustin Poirier, who then got a title shot, Gaethje deserves the next shot.”
The UFC and fans will be watching UFC 317 closely to see whether Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) or Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) claims the belt. Gaethje would jump at the chance to avenge his first-round submission loss to Oliveira at UFC 274, but a fight with Topuria would also be a major event.
“If Ilia wins, Justin Gaethje vs. Ilia Topuria would be a blockbuster,” Abdelaziz said.
