Bryan Braman, a former American football player who represented the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL, has passed away at the age of 38 after battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Braman, who was diagnosed in February, had undergone several surgeries in Seattle, USA, as part of his treatment. His agent, Sean Stellato, confirmed the news of his passing on Thursday. Braman was a devoted father to two daughters, aged 11 and 8.

“Bryan was a giant, not just in stature but in spirit,” Stellato told local media in Houston. “He had a heart as big as his frame. Genuine, humble, and fiercely loyal. He had a way of making everyone feel seen.”

Stellato recalled personal memories of Braman’s generosity. “He’d always insist I stay with him whenever I was in Philadelphia. He even gave up his bed for me. That’s the kind of person he was.”

A fundraising campaign set up to help cover Braman’s medical costs raised more than $88,000 (over R1.6 million). Several former teammates contributed, including NFL superstar J.J. Watt, who donated $10,000 (around R185,000).

Watt paid tribute to his former teammate online. “Rest in Peace, brother. Gone far too soon.”

Both of Braman’s former teams, the Houston Texans and the Philadelphia Eagles, shared heartfelt messages.

The Eagles, with whom Braman won an NFL Super Bowl title in 2018, praised his character. “Bryan was more than just a key part of our Super Bowl-winning team. He was a devoted father, a loyal teammate, and a beloved figure in our community.”

The Texans added, “We are deeply saddened by Bryan Braman’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all who knew him.”

Braman’s journey to the NFL was remarkable. He was never drafted, meaning no team initially picked him to play professionally. But he defied the odds and carved out a seven-year career in one of the toughest leagues in the world. His final game was the Super Bowl, where he helped the Eagles lift the trophy by making a crucial play in the earlier playoff rounds.

Reflecting on Braman’s legacy, Stellato said, “He came from nowhere, went undrafted, and still made a name for himself. Not just as a player, but as a champion. His life is a testament to perseverance, grit, and heart. The world of football and his family are hurting today.”
