Khamzat Chimaev has enlisted the help of renowned wrestling coach Salim Nutsalkhanov, a man who has trained multiple Olympic gold medallists, ahead of his middleweight title fight against South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis on 17 August at UFC 317.

The move signals Chimaev’s serious intent to prepare for what many believe will be his toughest test yet.

Chimaev, who remains undefeated in his professional career, is known for his suffocating grappling, early pressure, and finishing instinct. However, against Du Plessis, a fighter with proven takedown defence, awkward striking, and a track record of high level wins, he will be facing a different kind of challenge.

The two met briefly backstage at UFC 300, but on fight night, all small talk will be replaced by one of the most anticipated matchups of the year.

Du Plessis, who made history by becoming South Africa’s first UFC champion earlier this year, has risen through the ranks with notable victories over Derek Brunson, Robert Whittaker and Sean Strickland.

Nicknamed “Stillknocks,” the Pretoria born fighter has become known for his resilience, unorthodox rhythm, and ability to wear opponents down over multiple rounds, a potential concern for Chimaev, whose cardio has been questioned in the past.

Both fighters bring serious momentum and contrasting styles into the bout. For Chimaev, this is an opportunity to claim his first UFC title.

For Du Plessis, it is a chance to defend the belt and solidify his status among the elite in the division. The fight has drawn significant attention both globally and locally, with South Africans eager to see how Du Plessis fares on another massive stage.

Regardless of the outcome, it promises to be a high stakes contest between two of the most talked about athletes in the sport today.
