The San Francisco 49ers are finalizing a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire edge rusher Bryce Huff, sources told ESPN. The deal is expected to be completed next week when the NFL calendar moves into June.
As part of the trade, Huff’s contract is being restructured. He was set to earn $16.75 million in fully guaranteed money in 2025. Under the revised terms, the Eagles will cover $9.05 million, with the 49ers responsible for the remaining $7.95 million. In return, San Francisco is expected to send a mid-round draft pick to Philadelphia.
Huff reunites with defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who coached him during his early years with the New York Jets. Huff’s best NFL season came under Saleh in 2023, when he recorded 10 sacks and 68 pressures over 312 pass-rush snaps. His 21.8% pressure rate led the NFL, per Next Gen Stats.
That performance earned Huff a three-year, $51 million free agent deal with the Eagles in 2024. However, he struggled to make an impact in Philadelphia, posting just 13 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 12 games, including six starts.
Now joining a 49ers defense undergoing major changes, Huff arrives as a key piece opposite Nick Bosa—the only returning starter on the defensive line. San Francisco released defensive tackles Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins, as well as defensive end Leonard Floyd this offseason.
To rebuild, the 49ers turned to the draft, selecting defensive end Mykel Williams with the 11th overall pick, and adding tackles Alfred Collins and CJ West in the second and fourth rounds.
Huff’s experience and production on the edge could free up the rookie Williams to move across the line, especially in sub-packages. Williams played roughly 36% of his college snaps on the interior in 2024.
The move signals San Francisco’s continued effort to reshape its defensive front with a mix of veteran presence and young talent, aiming to remain among the NFL’s elite defenses.
