The Chicago Blackhawks, one of the most historic teams in the National Hockey League, have appointed Jeff Blashill as the club’s new head coach.
He becomes the 42nd person to take on the role in the team’s long-standing history. General Manager Kyle Davidson confirmed the announcement earlier today.
Blashill brings more than 25 years of coaching experience. He has worked across multiple levels of the game, from university coaching and youth development to the NHL and the international stage.
He joins the Blackhawks after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning. During that time, he helped them reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs each year.
“Jeff is a smart and experienced coach,” said Davidson. “He has a proven ability to work with young players and build success around them.
We are excited about the direction he will take the team.”
Blashill, who is 51 years old, previously served as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings for seven seasons. During that time, he led the team through a rebuilding phase and earned a playoff appearance in his first season. He leaves the Red Wings ranked fifth in games coached and sixth in wins in their team history.
Earlier in his career, Blashill made a strong impact with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings’ development team.
He led them to a championship title in 2013 and was recognised as the league’s best coach that same season. He also coached in the American Hockey League All-Star Classic.
Internationally, Blashill led the United States national team at three World Championships. He guided them to a bronze medal in 2018.
He also served as an assistant coach at other major tournaments including the World Junior Championship.
His coaching journey began in college hockey at Ferris State University, where he had previously played as a goalkeeper. He later coached at Miami University and Western Michigan University.
In between, he helped lead the Indiana Ice to a league title in the United States Hockey League.
Blashill’s appointment comes at a key moment for the Blackhawks. They are looking to rebuild and grow a new generation of talent.
His experience in development and winning at different levels is expected to bring both stability and a fresh vision to the club.
