Bigstar Johnson is a budding rapper whose real name is Tumelo Rakumako is the first winner of the hip-hop reality TV competition The Hustle. He chats about music and life after winning the competition.

1. I discovered my love for music when I was in primary school. I was eager to participate in a talent competition, so I rallied up some friends to start a rap crew. Even though we didn’t win, being on stage and seeing people responding to our music made me realise that I wanted to be a musician.
2. Music has always been a part of my life. When I was in high school, I was part of a hip-hop crew. In varsity, I was a drummer for a ban, so I can’t imagine my life without music.
3. Being part of The Hustle changed my life. Before entering the competition, I was a children’s music teacher in my neighbourhood. Now, I’m in a position where many people look up to me. I am still adjusting to this new-found fame, but I am still the same humble guy I was before the competition. I am happy that I get to live my dream.
4. Right now, I am wrapping up my EP, which should be dropping in February next year. I also have a couple of singles and videos coming out soon. I am excited and anticipating the release of my EP because it is my first body of work after the competition.
5. Creating the EP was a big challenge. As a signed artist now, I have to adjust to working with a team because I was used to doing everything by myself. But, I enjoy having a support structure and working with experienced musicians.
6. I am grateful for the opportunities that I have been afforded. I get to live my dream every day, and I couldn’t be happier. I appreciate how far I have come and I am excited about where I am going.
