We chat with the bag lady, Thuleka Duze

by Bongiwe Tshiqi

We chat to Thuleka Duze, an African print handbag entrepreneur, about starting and running ATG EKASI Handbags and Clothing.

By: Fundiswa Nkwanyana

1.I’m an entrepreneur and co-owner of ATG EKASI Handbags and Clothing. I operate the African print handbag manufacturing business with my business partner from a small back room in a yard of a township. We started the business because we saw a need for proudly South African manufactured designer handbags in African print.

2. Our company recently exhibited at Design Indaba. This was a great opportunity because the business received some international exposure. We even managed to secure international clients, and this will help to grow our business.

3. In order to run a successful business, entrepreneurs must be empowered with information. I realised that in order to grow the business, I needed to be well informed about entrepreneurship. That is why I was part of the small business academy offered by Stellenbosch University Business School. The academy taught me essential skills to propel the business forward.

4. Getting the business off the ground was challenging. We did not have enough money and machinery to work with, but we persevered. Today, we employ five staff members to help us manufacture the bags.

5. We would like to open a skills centre. As an entrepreneur, I want to give back by awarding grade 12 learners an opportunity to learn how to make handbags. I want to empower young people to be entrepreneurs, because not everyone can afford tertiary fees.
