Actress Khabonina Qubeka continues to reinvent herself with the many roles she plays in the entertainment industry. She chats to us about her upcoming movie titled Dora’s Peace.

1.We know you as an actress, dancer, choreographer, singer and businesswoman. How do you see yourself?
I am everything that my heart desires to be. I am a woman, an artist, a lover of life and most importantly, a woman living a purposeful life. I am thankful for the gift of life and the chance to do what I love.
2. How did growing up in Soweto influence you?
I loved growing up in Soweto. From an early age, I learnt to have courage after seeing my community protesting and fighting against apartheid. Soweto also has a creative energy that has helped me explore my creativity. Today, I am a fearless and driven artist because I was always surrounded by like-minded people.
3. You star in Dora’s Peace, and the movie will be in cinemas from 26 August. What can you tell us about your role?
I fell in love with Dora’s Peace because of the themes explored in the movie. Dora is a prostitute from Hillbrow, who protects a young boy from violence and organised crime. I love this role because people look down on prostitutes, forgetting that they are human too. The movie will open up debates that we are afraid to embark on.
4. South Africa is celebrating women’s month. What do you love about being a woman?
I love that I draw my strength from the strong women who fought against oppression and marched in 1956. I love that I am liberated and have the freedom to be a phenomenal woman because of the strides they took. I embrace my emotions, weaknesses and strengths. I love being a woman.
5. What is your favourite inspirational quote?
“I am not what you think I am. You are what you think I am.” The entrainment industry is judgemental, and this quote helped me let go of the opinions that people hold of me.
