Man Crush Monday – Oros Mampofu

by Boitumelo Mmakou

Oros, who plays Jama Kekana on Skeem Saam, tells us more about his character and staying true to himself.

Oros 1For those who have not been watching Skeem Saam, please give us insight on your character?

I play Jama Kekana, who is good friends with Thabiso. Jama is the voice of reason and the friend you run to when going through any bad situation.

Speaking of friendship, what’s been the best advice you’ve received from a friend?

To stay focused, regardless of the circumstance, and to keep my eyes on what I want.

What advice do you often find yourself giving to your friends?

Be transparent, keep your conscious clear and be true to you.

Oros 3The acting industry can be rough, what keeps you going?

Being focused and persistent in developing my skills has helped me improve my craft.

How exactly did you get into acting? Was it a new found love or a long time passion?

I had always wanted to be an actor. In high school, I would participate in plays. My passion for the arts led me to study drama at AFDA, where I got a degree in Live Performance. Right after my degree, I got my first acting job on the drama series Olwethu, followed by Rise. I then made top 6 of the Top Actor reality series before getting my role on Skeem Saam.

You have the total package when it comes to acting – from the charming looks, academic knowledge and experience. Is this it or will there be more from you in the future?

I plan on doing more. I have been working on a few projects, but I cannot really say much right now – all will be revealed in good time. I plan to change the acting game and empower others while I do that.

Oros 4On the note of empowerment, what’s your advice to young people who want to be a success in the industry?

I live by the letters D.E.P; Desire – you should have the desire to want the job and work for it. Execute – make a plan and follow through it. Persistent – keep at it and never give up on your goals.

Now let’s talk relationships, what is your perfect or ideal girlfriend?

Someone who empowers me and pushes me to follow my dreams.

And what makes for the perfect date?

A simple evening out, somewhere with a beautiful backdrop because I love being in a great environment.
