Black Excellence At The NAACP Image Awards

by Ayanda Ngcobo

A few of our most loved starlets sparkled on the red carpet when they stepped out to attend the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People awards.

Angela Bassett

Angela resembled an Egyptian queen in a black and gold floor-length dress. Her accessories and hair were bang on point and she proved that age ain’t nothing, but a number when it comes to looking good.

Eva Marcille

We want this whole outfit! Eva was flawless in a simple black bandeau and ombré tulle skirt. She was the perfect princess – fit for a night at the ball.

Gabrielle Union

Pale pink is Gabrielle’s colour. Her skin glowed against the shade and she looked amazing. The cut-out detail was cleverly located in all the right places, ensuring she maintained an elegant and classy factor.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw

Gugu faded into the background in a lemon dress. Its style was too plain, and would have stood out more if she had complemented it with a neckpiece and a different style belt.

Kerry Washington

We’re starting to think that pregnancy has dulled the flame of the usually vibrant Kerry. Although she donned red, which is usually such a striking and powerful colour, it fell completely flat on her and she looked bland.

Laverne Cox

Laverne has quite a masculine figure so A-line styles don’t do her justice. Her dress was too wide and made her look curvaceous in an unnecessary way. We rate she should stick to more fitted ensembles.

Taraji P. Henson

This dress could’ve looked well without the sequinned detail. The strong shade also seemed to overwhelm Taraji, so something softer would’ve been ideal. Boob tube styles are very boring, so when worn they need some interesting detail to elevate them to red carpet worthiness.

Tracee Ellis- Ross

Truth be told, we have seen Tracee in better outfits, so we’re not convinced by the material of this dress. Although the cut was modern, the fabric was outdated – and so the overall look clashed.

Wendy Raquel Robinson

For some reason, we immediately had flashbacks of the little mermaid when we spotted Wendy. The design and sea foam colour paired with the fishtail was overkill.
