It’s All About The Brand

by Amanda Ndlangisa

Chivas Regal Assistant Brand Manager, Moipone Moloantoa,28, talks about the ins and outs of brand management.

I finished matric in 2004 and went on to study Industrial Sociology and labour studies at the University of Pretoria.

My first job was at Elle Promotions… I worked as a promoter part-time while I was studying. This is when I was introduced to the liquor industry. I enjoyed what I did so much that after I completed my degree, I went on to become a KWV brand development rep.

Because education is important and I loved what I did, a year after I got my job as a KWV brand development rep, I decided to study marketing at IMM to enhance my skills. In 2015, I plan on studying brand management at Vega school of branding.

My job is amazing, but just like any other industry, it has challenges… one being that I work with hard liquor brands which are usually male dominated. I have learnt to be strong willed in this industry and confidence goes a long way. It works to my advantage working in a male-dominated industry because I get a lot of attention from people who are amused to see a woman take control in a male-dominated space.

The best part about my job is being able to be creative. My creative mind gets to work on a daily and exchange ideas with other like-minded people to find great ways to make impact for our brand. I love it. It is amazing knowing that I am part of the brains behind a product. Knowing that I am responsible for the marketing and planning amongst other things of a brand’s image excites me.

To survive in this industry… you need to be creative, strong willed and have your priorities straight.

If someone were to follow my path, they would need to be willing to learn and study the industry, practice patience and be willing to do the ground work.
