What was meant to be a launch for an upgraded sewer pump station and rising main project worth R5.98 million turned into an explosive exchange of insults. Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, is at the centre of criticism after hurling profanity at a resident during a community meeting.

From meeting to chaos

As community members joined the meeting, allowing the Minister to provide infrastructure updates, plans of action, and the like, the meeting quickly turned chaotic when a resident had to be escorted outside of the building to defuse an escalating situation.

The unfortunate exchange was captured on video and has gone viral on social media.

The video shows a man with a disability being forcibly removed from the building and the Minister exchanging words with him. IOL reports that the words exchanged were in an explicit manner.

Alleged recount of the situation

An administrator at Kouga Municipality, Kyle Minaar, detailed the exchange, sharing that concerns arose during the meeting, which was heavily politicised, and chaos erupted.

“Alright, she said the words, ‘voetsek jou ma se p**s’ while the resident was walking out of the hall, which took us all by surprise. I think everybody in the hall was in shock,” claimed Minaar.

Minaar expressed disappointment, believing she disrespected both the man and the community. However, he is not the only one who is disappointed, with many opposing parties calling for disciplinary action.

EFF responds

According to The Citizen, EFF spokesperson Thembi Msane shared that the “ANC is far too entitled” to the votes of the South African people. She further claims that it is this very reason that even during a campaign trail, party representatives can insult residents and blackmail them with service delivery.

The EFF and other parties said they would report her to Parliament’s ethics committee.
