Why watermelon deserves a spot in your diet

There’s more to watermelon than its reputation as the ultimate summer refresher. Juicy, naturally sweet and packed with water, this vibrant fruit is an easy way to add nutrients to your everyday diet.

A naturally hydrating choice

According to Cleveland Clinic, watermelon is made up of roughly 91–92% water, making it a refreshing food to enjoy alongside your usual water intake. Staying hydrated supports essential functions including temperature regulation and digestion, particularly during summer.

It’s also relatively low in energy density, so a generous serving can feel satisfying without being particularly heavy.

Rich in lycopene

One of watermelon’s standout nutritional features is lycopene, the antioxidant pigment responsible for the red colour of ripe flesh. Research from the USDA Agricultural Research Service has found that watermelon can contain as much or more lycopene than raw tomatoes, although levels vary according to variety and growing conditions.

According to Healthline, lycopene is being studied for its potential role in supporting cardiovascular health and protecting cells from oxidative stress.

However, watermelon should be viewed as one nutritious component of a balanced diet, rather than a treatment or cure for disease.

More than just water

Watermelon also provides vitamin C, vitamin A and potassium, as well as the amino acid citrulline.

The body can convert citrulline into arginine, which is involved in several important processes, including those affecting blood vessels.

Easy ways to enjoy it

Keep chilled watermelon ready for a quick snack, or add it to salads with cucumber, mint and feta. It also works beautifully in smoothies, fresh fruit salads or as a refreshing accompaniment to a summer braai.

So, the next time you reach for a slice, remember: watermelon isn’t simply a sweet treat. It’s a delicious, hydrating fruit that can make a worthwhile contribution to a varied, balanced diet.
