5 Passive-aggressive habits that are quietly destroying your relationship

Healthy relationships are built on trust, respect and open communication. But not every relationship problem begins with shouting matches or dramatic arguments.

Sometimes, it’s the subtle, passive-aggressive behaviours that slowly chip away at intimacy and create emotional distance. If left unchecked, these habits can damage even the strongest partnerships.

Here are five common passive-aggressive behaviours to watch out for—and how to replace them with healthier communication.

1. Giving the silent treatment

Ignoring your partner instead of discussing what’s wrong may seem like a way to avoid conflict, but it often creates confusion and resentment.

According to VeryWell Mind, the silent treatment in a relationship is a form of emotional abuse used to control and hurt the other partner. Healthy relationships require honest conversations, even when they’re uncomfortable.

2. Using sarcasm instead of honesty

Making cutting jokes or sarcastic remarks can disguise hurt feelings, but they rarely solve the real issue. Speaking directly about your emotions is far more constructive than hiding criticism behind humour.

3. Saying “I’m fine” when you’re not

Pretending everything is okay while expecting your partner to guess what’s wrong sets both people up for frustration.

Clear communication helps prevent misunderstandings and allows problems to be addressed before they grow.

4. Keeping score

Bringing up old mistakes whenever a disagreement arises creates an unhealthy cycle of blame.

According to Psychology Today, examples of scorekeeping include tracking chores, financial contributions, who initiates various activities (including intimacy), or feeling entitled to a particular thing or act because a partner benefited from past fortune, favour or goodwill.

Rather than focusing on past grievances, work together to resolve the issue at hand and move forward.

5. Deliberately withholding affection or help

Refusing to show affection, assist with responsibilities, or support your partner as a form of punishment can damage emotional security. According to The Mend Project, when a partner withholds in any capacity, it can make the other person feel ignored or isolated. Expressing your needs openly is far more effective than trying to “teach someone a lesson.”

Passive-aggressive habits often stem from unresolved emotions or fear of confrontation, but they rarely produce positive outcomes. Replacing indirect behaviour with respectful, honest communication can strengthen trust, reduce conflict and deepen emotional connection.

Recognising these patterns is the first step towards building a healthier, happier relationship where both partners feel heard, valued and understood.
