Household items you should replace more often than you think

Many household items are designed to last for years, but others have a much shorter lifespan than most people realise. Holding on to worn-out items for too long can affect hygiene, indoor air quality and even your health.

While replacement timelines vary depending on how often an item is used, cleaning experts and health organisations recommend regularly checking everyday essentials for signs of wear and tear.

Here are some common household items you should replace more often than you think.

Kitchen sponges

Kitchen sponges are one of the biggest sources of bacteria in many homes because they stay damp and frequently come into contact with food residue.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, regularly cleaning kitchen surfaces and using clean cleaning tools can help reduce the spread of harmful germs. Food safety experts at Food & Nutrition Magazine recommend replacing kitchen sponges every one to two weeks, especially if they develop an unpleasant odour or begin to fall apart.

Toothbrushes

Your toothbrush works hard every day, but its bristles become worn over time, making it less effective at removing plaque.

The American Dental Association recommends replacing toothbrushes every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed. Toothbrushes should also be replaced after recovering from illnesses such as the flu or certain infections to reduce the risk of reintroducing germs.

Pillows

Even if your pillow still looks fine, it can accumulate dust mites, dead skin cells and allergens over time.

According to the Sleep Foundation, most pillows should be replaced every one to two years, depending on the material and how well they are maintained. If your pillow has lost its shape, feels lumpy or no longer provides adequate support, it may be time for a new one.

Cutting boards

Cutting boards develop knife grooves over time, creating spaces where bacteria can hide.

The United States Department of Agriculture advises replacing cutting boards that become deeply scored, cracked or difficult to clean thoroughly. Using separate cutting boards for raw meat and fresh produce can also help reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

Smoke alarm batteries

Smoke alarms can only protect your household if they are functioning properly.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, smoke alarm batteries should be tested monthly and replaced at least once a year unless the device uses a sealed long-life battery. Smoke alarms themselves should generally be replaced every 10 years.

Water filter cartridges

Many people remember to refill their water filters but forget to replace the cartridges inside them.

Manufacturers recommend replacing filter cartridges according to the product guidelines, as clogged filters become less effective at removing contaminants and improving taste. The World Health Organisation notes that properly maintained drinking water systems are important for ensuring safe water quality.

Bath towels

Bath towels may seem like they last forever, but repeated washing gradually reduces their absorbency.

Home care experts generally recommend replacing towels every two to five years, depending on their condition. Towels that remain rough, thin, or develop persistent odours despite washing should be replaced.

Plastic food containers

Plastic food containers can become scratched, stained or warped over time, particularly after repeated heating.

The United States Food and Drug Administration advises discarding plastic containers that become cracked or damaged, as worn containers may be more difficult to clean effectively. Always use microwave-safe containers when reheating food.

Air filters

If your home has an air conditioner, air purifier or HVAC system, replacing filters regularly can improve both air quality and the efficiency of the appliance.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, clean filters help improve indoor air quality and reduce airborne particles. Most manufacturers recommend replacing filters every one to three months, depending on usage and environmental conditions.

Cleaning cloths

Reusable microfibre cloths and dishcloths eventually lose their ability to trap dirt and bacteria effectively.

Wash reusable cloths after each use and replace them once they begin to lose absorbency, develop permanent odours or show signs of wear.

Replacing everyday household items before they become unhygienic or ineffective can help create a cleaner, healthier and safer home. Keeping a simple maintenance schedule can also save money in the long run by helping appliances and household essentials perform at their best.
