Ever feel like the weekend disappears before you’ve had a chance to enjoy it? The secret to making your weekend feel longer starts on Friday night.

Instead of collapsing on the couch after work, a few intentional activities can help you switch off, recharge and make the most of your time off.

1. Tidy your space

Homes & Gardens recommends spending 30 minutes cleaning up your home. Waking up to a tidy space on Saturday morning reduces stress and frees up time for the things you actually enjoy.

2. Plan one weekend highlight

Whether it’s a hike, brunch or a local market visit, having one exciting activity planned gives you something to look forward to without overloading your schedule.

3. Prep breakfast or lunch

Prepare overnight oats, chop fruit or meal prep for Saturday. You’ll spend less time cooking and more time relaxing.

4. Have a digital detox

Put your phone away for an hour before bed. According to Healthline, the benefits of a digital detox may include improved sleep, feeling more present in the moment and better connection with friends and loved ones.

Reducing screen time on a Friday night can improve sleep quality, helping you wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the weekend.

5. Enjoy a low-key social evening

Invite friends over for a braai, board games or coffee instead of staying out late. You’ll still connect with loved ones without sacrificing the next day.

6. Do something you love

Read a book, watch a movie, listen to music or start a hobby. Beginning your weekend with something enjoyable sets a positive tone.

7. Get to bed a little earlier

Resist the temptation to stay up too late simply because it’s Friday. A good night’s sleep helps you make the most of Saturday and Sunday, making the weekend feel fuller and less rushed.

A few mindful Friday night habits can make a surprising difference. By preparing ahead, prioritising rest and choosing activities that genuinely recharge you, you’ll feel like your weekend lasts longer and you’ll head into Monday feeling more refreshed.
