The deaths of 43 young men during this year’s Xhosa winter initiation season have renewed concerns about the safety of traditional initiation practices in South Africa.
The annual initiation season is an important cultural rite of passage for many Xhosa families, marking the transition from boyhood to manhood. The tradition carries deep cultural and spiritual significance and has been observed for generations.

Minister comments on 43 lives claimed during initiation
However, the reported deaths have once again raised questions about the safety of some initiation schools.
Health complications, dehydration, infections, and the operation of illegal or unregulated initiation schools are among the issues that have been linked to fatalities in previous years.
According to eNCA, authorities have arrested 40 people, with over 58 illegal initiation schools shut down. Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Velenkosini Hlabisa said: “Consequence management would be intensified against those who fail to meet their responsibilities.
“We can’t lose so many young people every season. This is something that can be avoided.”

Hlabisa urged parents to take responsibility when choosing initiation schools for their children, warning them to avoid illegal and unsafe initiation institutions.
“We cannot say it is the responsibility of the government. The government is doing all it can, but now we need to take the ball to the court of the parents and effectively arrest them,” he later said.
As affected communities mourn the loss of these young men, renewed calls are being made for greater cooperation between traditional leadership, government, healthcare professionals, and families to preserve this important cultural tradition while ensuring the safety and well-being of every initiate.
