Lawrence Maleka joins all-star cast for upcoming drama series

Award-winning actor and presenter Lawrence Maleka has secured a leading role in the upcoming drama series Critical but Stable, where he will portray the character Duke. The series is adapted from Angela Makholwa’s acclaimed novel, bringing one of South African literature’s gripping stories to television.

The casting marks another significant step in Lawrence’s acting career as he continues to transition between hosting, acting and leading major television productions.

A gripping adaptation from Angela Makholwa’s book

Critical but Stable is based on Angela’s work, known for her sharp storytelling and psychological depth. The adaptation promises a compelling narrative that blends drama, suspense and emotional complexity, staying true to the themes that have made her writing widely celebrated.

The character Duke, played by Lawrence, sits at the centre of the story, driving much of the tension and emotional conflict that unfolds throughout the series.

Prime-time debut on Mzansi Magic

The series is set to premiere on Mzansi Magic in the highly competitive 8pm Sunday night slot, a prime-time position reserved for some of the channel’s biggest productions. The show is scheduled to debut on 26 July 2026, positioning it as one of the most anticipated local dramas of the year.

Mzansi Magic continues to invest in locally produced stories that reflect South African voices, literature and talent, with Critical but Stable joining its growing slate of high-quality drama offerings.

Expanding Lawrence Maleka’s screen presence
