Johannesburg came alive this past weekend as music lovers gathered at Joburg Theatre for the fifth edition of The Rebirth of Ubuntu concert, a powerful celebration of South African musical heritage, cultural identity and unity.
Curated by acclaimed guitarist and composer Billy Monama, the two-night production paid tribute to some of the country’s most influential music legends while reflecting on the enduring spirit of ubuntu.

A rich historical significance
Held under the theme ‘50 Years of Youth Legacy,’ the concert commemorated five decades since the 1976 youth uprising, using music and storytelling to honour the generations who shaped South Africa’s history.
Backed by a 20-piece orchestra conducted by Grammy Award-winning producer Joe ‘JB’ Arthur, the event blended jazz, soul, and African musical traditions in a moving showcase of remembrance and celebration.
Honouring the greats at The Rebirth of Ubuntu
The star-studded line-up featured Lira, Zoë Modiga, and Tutu Puoane, each delivering heartfelt tributes to iconic South African artists.

Lira honoured the legacy of Miriam Makeba, while Zoë Modiga celebrated the fearless artistry of Busi Mhlongo. Tutu Puoane remembered the late Sibongile Khumalo through a stirring vocal performance.
Talented singer Vusi Nova and gifted guitarist Billy Monama were also among the acts who took to the stage and wowed the crowd.

A highlight of the evening was the legendary guitarist Jimmy Dludlu as the concert’s honorary artist, celebrating his immense contribution to South African music.
