UK woman goes viral after calling Cape Town mall biggest in South Africa

A UK woman thught she visited the biggest mall in South Africa.

A young content creator from the United Kingdom, Issey Moloney, visited Canal Walk Shopping Centre in Cape Town and mistakenly labelled it the biggest mall in South Africa. Locals were quick to correct her error in the trending video.

UK woman explores Canal Walk Shopping Centre

Issey took to her TikTok account on 21 May 2026, showing herself touring the mall and showing online viewers what it had to offer. Passing all the restaurants, Issey headed to Wonderland, a play centre with various coin-operated arcade games, pool tables, and a bowling alley.

The tourist, along with a few friends, then headed to Asian Mart to grab a few snacks.

What is the biggest mall in South Africa?

According to The South African, the biggest mall in the country is Johannesburg’s Fourways Mall, with a Gross Lettable Area (GLA) of 178 202 square metres. Menlyn Park Shopping Centre in Pretoria takes second place (177 000 square metres), followed by Gateway Theatre of Shopping in uMhlanga (176 400 square metres) and Sandton City in Johannesburg (147 941 square metres). Canal Walk Shopping Centre enters fifth place on the list at 147 834 square metres.

Many local internet users gathered in the comment section to express their thoughts about Issey’s viral TikTok video.

@ecm_1974 wrote in the comment section, “This is not even close to being the biggest mall in South Africa. Maybe in Cape Town, but not South Africa.”

@thobekabh tld Issey, “Canal Walk is small compared to Gateway in Durban and Mall of Africa in Johannesburg.”

“Not everything is in Cape Town. Travel a bit more in South Africa,” informed waynenaidoo34.
