Makeup is meant to enhance your features, boost confidence, and express personal style—but certain habits can unintentionally add years to your appearance. Many of these mistakes are subtle, often going unnoticed in daily routines, yet they can make skin look tired, dull, or less youthful.

Here are some common makeup mistakes that may be secretly ageing your look—and how to fix them.
1. Using too much foundation
Heavy foundation can settle into fine lines and highlight texture, making skin look older rather than smoother. Instead of layering product for full coverage, opt for a lightweight, buildable formula and focus only on areas that need correction. A natural, skin-like finish often creates a more youthful effect than full coverage.
2. Skipping primer and skincare prep
Makeup applied on dry or uneven skin tends to cling to texture and emphasise fine lines. Without proper hydration or primer, foundation can look patchy and ageing. A good skincare base—moisturiser and primer—helps create a smoother canvas and improves makeup longevity.
3. Over-powdering the face
While powder helps control shine, too much of it can make skin look flat and dry. This dryness can highlight wrinkles and reduce natural glow. Instead, focus powder only on oily areas like the T-zone and leave the rest of the face more radiant.
4. Harsh or overdrawn eyebrows
Eyebrows frame the face, but overly dark, thin, or sharply drawn brows can make features look severe and less natural. Soft, well-blended brows with a natural shape tend to lift the face and create a more youthful appearance.
5. Using the wrong concealer shade
A concealer that is too light can create a grey or ashy effect under the eyes, making dark circles more noticeable and ageing the face. Choosing a shade that closely matches your skin tone—or is only slightly lighter—helps brighten without creating contrast.

6. Heavy eyeliner on the lower lash line
Thick, dark eyeliner on the lower lid can drag the eyes downward and make them appear smaller or tired. A softer approach, such as smudging or using lighter tones, creates a fresher, more lifted look.
7. Ignoring blush placement
Blush applied too low on the cheeks can pull the face downward visually. This can unintentionally emphasise sagging or tiredness. Applying blush slightly higher on the cheekbones creates a natural lift and youthful glow.
8. Over-matte lips
Very matte, dry lip products can emphasise lip lines and reduce fullness, making lips appear thinner and older. Hydrating lipsticks, gloss, or satin finishes help maintain a plumper, fresher look.
9. Using outdated makeup techniques
Trends change, and some older techniques—like overly contoured faces or heavy baking—can look harsh with modern lighting and photography. A softer, blended approach often looks more natural and age-defying.
10. Neglecting skin glow
A completely matte face can sometimes appear flat and tired. Healthy skin naturally has dimension and light reflection. Adding subtle highlight to high points of the face can restore a youthful, radiant finish.
