Ever felt like your brain has too many tabs open, and several of them are playing loud, unidentifiable music? Well, you wouldn’t be alone.
This isn’t just feeling “stressed out”. Emotional flooding is a state of being completely overwhelmed by intense emotions. This then affects your logical brain function, causing it to shut down.
The Citizen reports, “according to recent Google Trends data from 1 April 2026, the term ‘emotional flooding’ has doubled in search interest this year and in a world still reeling from a ‘Super El Niño’ and high-pressure work cultures, South Africans are increasingly searching for labels to describe the feeling of being psychologically submerged.”

So, what causes emotional flooding?
Understanding the triggers is the first step towards managing emotional flooding. While it’s often linked to overstimulation, emotional flooding can have serious consequences for your daily life.
As noted by The Citizen, “Emotional flooding is a psychological ‘flood’ where your amygdala takes over, often during conflict or high stress moments. This is particularly important in the context of romantic, work and other relations.”
According to Psychology Today, harsh conversations, past conflicts, stress, attachment styles and trauma can trigger flooding, especially in relationships.
The flooding is unique to each person, depending on the environment and circumstances. These may include:
- Emotional flooding caused by loss
- Emotional flooding caused by work stress
- Emotional flooding caused by conflict in any relation you may have
