Eastern Cape on edge: Police on high alert after violent protests over ‘Nigerian king’

Police in the Eastern Cape remain on high alert following violent protests in KuGompo (formerly East London) over the coronation of Nigerian national Solomon Ogbonna Eziko as Igwe Ndigbo.

The initially peaceful, approved march — led by traditional leaders opposing the coronation — turned violent when protesters threw stones and set vehicles alight.

The report indicates that at least 10 vehicles were damaged, a building was partially burned, and two people were injured.

Police used rubber bullets and stun grenades to restore order, and no arrests have been made.

Traditional leaders, backed by political voices including ATM leader Vuyo Zungula, are demanding Eziko’s deportation along with others involved in the ceremony, calling for an investigation into their immigration status and possible legal action.
