What was meant to be a moment of continental celebration has turned into one of African football’s most explosive disputes in recent memory.
Senegal’s government has formally called for an independent corruption investigation after the Confederation of African Football overturned the AFCON final result and awarded the title to Morocco.
For many fans, it is not just about a trophy. It is about trust in the game itself.

A final rewritten off the pitch
The controversy stems from the dramatic AFCON final played in Rabat earlier this year. Senegal had secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory after extra time, with Pape Gueye’s goal appearing to seal the win.
But the match was far from straightforward.
During stoppage time in regulation, Senegal’s players walked off the field for more than 15 minutes in protest after a penalty was awarded to Morocco. When play eventually resumed, Brahim Diaz’s spot kick was saved by Edouard Mendy, keeping Senegal alive before their eventual extra-time breakthrough.
That result, however, has now been erased.
CAF’s appeals board ruled that Senegal’s actions constituted a forfeit, overturning the scoreline and registering a 3-0 win in favour of Morocco.

Senegal pushes back
Senegal’s response has been swift and uncompromising.
In a strongly worded statement, the government rejected the ruling outright, arguing that a match played and won on the field should not be undone in such a manner. Officials warned that the decision risks damaging CAF’s credibility and the integrity of African football.
The call for an independent international investigation into possible corruption within CAF’s structures marks a significant escalation. It moves the dispute beyond sport and into governance, raising uncomfortable questions about transparency and accountability in continental football.
Federation to take the fight to CAS
The Senegalese Football Federation has backed the government’s stance and confirmed it will challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.
For Senegal, this is about more than reversing a result. It is about defending what they see as a legitimate victory and protecting the reputation of their national team.
Their argument is clear. A controversial moment during a match should not outweigh the outcome of the game itself.

Morocco welcomes clarity
On the other side, Morocco’s football authorities have embraced the decision.
They maintain that the ruling reinforces the importance of respecting competition rules and provides clearer guidance for handling similar incidents in future tournaments.
From their perspective, CAF’s intervention strengthens consistency in African football governance, even if the decision remains deeply contested.
When football becomes political
The fallout has extended beyond the pitch and into the political arena.
Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko previously criticised the detention of Senegalese supporters following crowd trouble linked to the final, suggesting the situation had spiralled beyond sport.
His remarks highlighted the strained atmosphere between two nations that traditionally share strong diplomatic ties.
A defining moment for African football
This dispute arrives at a time when African football is striving to grow its global reputation and commercial strength.
Moments like this test the credibility of its governing bodies and the confidence of fans across the continent.
Whether the case at CAS changes the outcome or not, the AFCON 2025 final will be remembered not for the football played, but for the questions it raised long after the final whistle.
