The dust has not yet settled on one of the most dramatic Africa Cup of Nations finals in recent memory, and now CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe has stepped in with a measured but telling response.
After days of debate, outrage and disbelief across the continent, CAF’s Appeal Board officially overturned Senegal’s on-field 1-0 victory over Morocco in the AFCON 2025 final. The ruling handed Morocco a 3-0 win instead, citing Senegal’s walk-off during stoppage time as a breach of tournament regulations.
For many fans, it was a moment that shifted the story of the tournament entirely.

A final decided beyond the pitch
The controversy stems from a chaotic closing stretch of the final, where Senegal’s players left the field in protest after a late penalty decision. While they eventually returned and went on to win the match in extra time, the incident proved decisive off the pitch.
CAF’s judicial structures ruled that the walk-off violated Articles 82 and 84, effectively nullifying Senegal’s victory and awarding the title to Morocco.
It is a rare move in international football, and one that has sparked intense debate about discipline, fairness and how far governing bodies should go in enforcing regulations.

Motsepe calls the incidents unacceptable
Responding to the ruling, Motsepe did not mince his words. He described the events that unfolded during the final as unacceptable and acknowledged the damage caused to what should have been a showcase moment for African football.
At the same time, he made it clear that CAF’s leadership stands firmly behind its judicial bodies, stressing that their independence and authority must be respected.
That balance between accountability and governance appears to be central to CAF’s current stance.
Stronger rules and stricter consequences on the way
Looking ahead, Motsepe signalled that changes are coming.
CAF has already scheduled an Executive Committee meeting to review its disciplinary framework, with the aim of introducing tougher and more effective sanctions. The intention is clear: prevent a repeat of scenes that undermine the credibility of major tournaments.
There is also renewed focus on improving officiating standards across the continent. Motsepe pointed to ongoing investment in referees, VAR systems and match officials, suggesting that better decision-making on the field remains a priority.
For many supporters, this is a long-standing concern. Officiating controversies have followed several recent tournaments, and AFCON 2025 may prove to be a turning point.

A saga far from over
While Morocco has welcomed the ruling as consistent with the regulations, Senegal is not backing down. The West African giants have indicated they will take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
That means the final chapter of this story is still to be written.
For African football, however, the bigger picture may lie beyond who lifts the trophy. The events surrounding this final have exposed deeper questions about governance, discipline and trust in the game.
And as Motsepe’s response suggests, CAF knows it cannot afford to look away.
