Senegal takes AFCON title fight to court after CAF shock decision

by nikita.m

What should have been a moment of lasting celebration for Senegal has instead spiralled into one of African football’s most controversial disputes in recent memory.

Just weeks after lifting the Africa Cup of Nations trophy on the pitch, Senegal now finds itself fighting for that same title in a courtroom.

CAF decision turns final on its head

In a ruling that stunned fans across the continent, the Confederation of African Football overturned the result of the 2025 AFCON final. The governing body’s Appeal Board ruled in favour of Morocco, awarding them a 3-0 victory by forfeit.

At the heart of the decision were alleged breaches of tournament regulations by Senegal during the final. CAF cited specific rules around team conduct, concluding that Senegal’s actions invalidated their participation in the match.

In simple terms, the game that Senegal believed they had won no longer counts in the eyes of CAF.

Senegal refuses to back down

Senegal’s football federation has wasted no time in responding. The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football has officially escalated the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the highest authority for global sports disputes.

Their argument is clear and firm. Matches should be decided on the field, not in boardrooms.

Senegal believes the technical violations referenced by CAF do not justify stripping a team of a continental title. The federation is now pushing for urgent intervention, hoping CAS will suspend CAF’s decision while the case is reviewed.

What happens next

CAS will now become the battleground for this unprecedented dispute. If the court sides with Senegal, the original result could be reinstated, restoring their AFCON crown. If not, Morocco’s administrative victory will stand as one of the most unusual title wins in football history.

These cases are rarely quick. Legal proceedings at CAS can take weeks or even months, meaning the uncertainty around the 2025 champions could linger well into the year.

A Final That Refuses To End

AFCON finals are meant to produce iconic moments, the kind fans talk about for generations. Instead, this one has left a lingering question mark.

For Senegal, this is no longer just about a trophy. It is about principle, fairness, and the belief that football should ultimately be decided between the white lines.

As the case heads to Switzerland, all eyes will be on what could become a defining moment for how African football handles controversy at the highest level.
