The part of your fridge you’re (probably) using wrong

by Staff Bona

Open your fridge after a grocery run and chances are you’ll slide fresh produce into the first open space you see. A shelf here, a drawer there. It seems harmless enough.

But that small habit could be the reason your spinach wilts too quickly or your herbs turn limp before the week is over.

The most misunderstood spot in your fridge? The crisper drawer. And despite its name, many of us aren’t actually using it the way it was designed.

More than just extra storage

The crisper drawer isn’t simply a place to hide vegetables you forgot you bought. It’s designed to create a slightly different climate from the rest of the fridge – one that helps fresh produce last longer.

While the main fridge shelves circulate cold air and keep humidity low, the crisper drawer traps a bit more moisture. That higher humidity helps fruits and vegetables stay fresh instead of drying out.

When produce sits on open shelves instead, it loses moisture faster. That’s when leafy greens start to wilt and carrots go bendy long before they should.

A simple switch in where you store your produce can stretch the life of your groceries – and save you from tossing sad vegetables at the end of the week.

How to store produce the smart way

Not all fruits and vegetables like the same environment. If your fridge has two crisper drawers, there’s a good reason for it.

High humidity drawers work best for vegetables that lose moisture quickly. Think:

  • Leafy greens
  • Herbs
  • Broccoli
  • Cucumbers
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Avocados
  • Stone fruit
  • Melons

Many fruits release ethylene gas as they ripen. In a humid space, that gas can build up and cause fruit to ripen – and spoil – faster.

A few small tweaks that make a big difference

Using your crisper properly doesn’t require a full fridge overhaul. Just a few mindful habits can go a long way.

  • Don’t overpack the drawer: Air still needs to circulate. If the drawer is crammed, produce spoils faster.
  • Store delicate items on top: Heavier vegetables like butternut or cabbage should sit at the bottom, with softer produce placed above them to avoid bruising.
  • Keep raw meat away from produce: Fresh fruit and veg are best kept separate from raw proteins to avoid any risk of contamination.
  • Ditch the sealed plastic bags: Many vegetables last longer when they can breathe. If you prefer separating items, opt for perforated bags or reusable produce bags.

The drawer that saves your groceries

The crisper drawer might seem like a small feature, but it quietly does a lot of work. When used properly, it keeps produce fresher for longer and helps reduce unnecessary food waste.

So next time you unpack your groceries, pause before sliding those vegetables onto the nearest shelf.

Your fridge already has the perfect spot for them – you just need to use it the right way.
