Mamelodi Sundowns delivered a confident performance at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night, beating Stade Malien 3-0 to put themselves firmly in control of their CAF Champions League quarterfinal tie.
The Betway Premiership champions showed their class in front of home supporters, producing a composed display that leaves the Malian side with a steep challenge when the teams meet again for the second leg in Mali next week.
Goals from Khuliso Mudau, Brayan Leon and Iqraam Rayners sealed the result as Sundowns continued their strong record in Africa’s premier club competition.

Sundowns take charge early
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso shuffled his squad for the continental clash, making seven changes to the side that secured a league win over Orbit College earlier in the week.
Despite the rotation, the Tshwane giants quickly settled into their rhythm. Sundowns controlled possession from the opening minutes, pushing forward with intent and forcing Stade Malien onto the back foot.
Their breakthrough arrived just after the half hour mark. Arthur Sales played a key role in the move, setting up Khuliso Mudau, who finished confidently into the far corner.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but after a review by the Video Assistant Referee, the decision was overturned and Sundowns were deservedly ahead.

Leon and Rayners extend the advantage
Sundowns continued to dictate the pace after the break and doubled their lead ten minutes into the second half.
Nuno Santos delivered a well placed pass into the area and Brayan Leon made no mistake from close range, calmly finishing to stretch the home side’s advantage.
The Brazilians kept the pressure on and their third goal arrived midway through the second half. Substitute Iqraam Rayners connected with a superb cross from Santos and volleyed home in the 64th minute to cap off another flowing Sundowns move.

Big task ahead for Stade Malien
Stade Malien did manage to create a few attacking moments but struggled to trouble Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams throughout the match.
With a three goal deficit to overcome, the Malian club now faces a difficult task in the return leg. Sundowns, meanwhile, will travel to Mali full of confidence as they aim to book their place in the semifinals of the CAF Champions League.
For the South African champions, the result was more than just a win. It was another reminder of their ambition to compete among the very best clubs on the African continent.
