Cardoso fumes over fixture congestion as Sundowns prepare for Champions League test

by nikita.m

Mamelodi Sundowns may have secured another comfortable victory in the Betway Premiership this week, but head coach Miguel Cardoso was far from satisfied once the final whistle blew.

Masandawana defeated Orbit College 2-0 to return to the top of the league standings, continuing their strong domestic form. Yet the Portuguese coach used the post match moment to raise concerns about what he believes is an exhausting schedule that could undermine the club’s ambitions on the African stage.

For Cardoso, the bigger picture extends beyond a single league result.

A demanding run of fixtures

Sundowns have been navigating a tightly packed calendar in recent weeks. Before the win against Orbit College, the Tshwane giants had already faced Golden Arrows on 4 March, just three days after another league outing.

Now the focus shifts quickly to continental competition. Sundowns are set to take on Malian side Stade Malien in a crucial CAF Champions League encounter on Friday.

The short turnaround between matches is what has frustrated Cardoso the most. In his view, asking teams to juggle league fixtures so close to important continental games places unnecessary strain on players.

A concern for South African football

Cardoso believes the issue is bigger than his own team. According to the coach, South African clubs representing the country in Africa should be given conditions that allow them to compete effectively.

He argued that playing a domestic match only days before a Champions League fixture is far from ideal preparation for such a demanding tournament.

His comments touch on a debate that has surfaced repeatedly in local football circles. Clubs competing in Africa often face intense travel schedules and high pressure matches, while still trying to maintain consistency in domestic competitions.

Sundowns carry national expectations

Mamelodi Sundowns have become one of South Africa’s most reliable representatives in continental football over the past decade. The club regularly advances deep into the CAF Champions League and is widely seen as a strong contender whenever the tournament begins.

That reputation also brings expectations. Supporters and stakeholders across the country look to Sundowns to challenge the best clubs in Africa and keep South African football visible on the continental stage.

But as the team prepares for the clash against Stade Malien, Cardoso’s message is clear. If local teams are expected to succeed in Africa, the domestic calendar must support that goal rather than make it harder to achieve.

For Sundowns, the next challenge arrives quickly. And while the team continues its push for success at home and abroad, their coach has made it known that the battle is not only against opponents on the pitch.
