Champions League drama unfolds as Liverpool stumble, Atletico dominate and Bayern run riot

by nikita.m

The Champions League last 16 delivered a night packed with shocks, heavy defeats and late drama as Europe’s biggest clubs battled for a place in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool were stunned in Istanbul, Tottenham endured a nightmare evening in Madrid, Bayern Munich put one foot firmly in the next round and Barcelona snatched a dramatic late equaliser in England.

With the second legs still to come, several ties remain wide open while others already look all but decided.

Galatasaray strike early to punish Liverpool

Liverpool’s hopes of rescuing their season suffered a major setback after a narrow defeat to Galatasaray in Istanbul.

The Turkish giants claimed a 1-0 victory thanks to a first half goal from Mario Lemina, leaving the Premier League side with plenty of work to do in the return leg at Anfield.

The goal arrived early when Galatasaray capitalised on Liverpool’s ongoing vulnerability from set pieces. Victor Osimhen flicked on a corner and Lemina reacted quickest to head home from close range.

Liverpool struggled to settle in the intense atmosphere at RAMS Park. The home crowd created a hostile environment that the visitors found difficult to handle, something that has troubled several European teams over the years.

Arne Slot’s side created chances but lacked cutting edge. Florian Wirtz came close early on after intercepting a loose pass from goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, while Alexis Mac Allister also missed a promising opportunity.

Mohamed Salah made history by surpassing Jamie Carragher for the most Champions League appearances by a Liverpool player but it proved to be a frustrating night for the Egyptian forward, who was substituted in the second half.

Liverpool thought they had equalised late in the match, but VAR ruled out the effort for handball. With Cody Gakpo narrowly missing in the closing moments, the Reds left Turkey empty handed.

They now face a crucial second leg at Anfield on 18 March if they want to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Atletico punish Tottenham in chaotic first half

Tottenham endured a disastrous evening in Madrid as Atletico Madrid ran out 5-2 winners in their first leg clash.

The match was effectively decided within the opening 22 minutes as Atletico raced into a four goal lead.

Julian Alvarez scored twice for Diego Simeone’s side, while Marcos Llorente, Antoine Griezmann and Robin Le Normand also found the net.

Spurs were undone by a series of defensive errors. Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky made two costly mistakes early in the match, prompting coach Igor Tudor to replace him after just 17 minutes.

By that stage Atletico were already firmly in control. Llorente opened the scoring before Griezmann and Alvarez struck in quick succession to put the Spanish side three goals ahead.

Le Normand added a fourth before Tottenham managed to respond through Pedro Porro.

Despite pulling another goal back later through Dominic Solanke, the damage had already been done.

Tottenham, currently battling near the bottom of the Premier League table, now face a monumental task in the return leg.

Bayern deliver statement performance in Italy

Bayern Munich produced one of the standout performances of the round with a commanding 6-1 victory over Atalanta in Bergamo.

The German giants were relentless from the start, pressing aggressively and creating chances early.

Josip Stanisic opened the scoring before Michael Olise stole the show with a brilliant brace. Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson and Jamal Musiala also added goals as Bayern overwhelmed their Italian opponents.

Even with star names like Harry Kane starting on the bench, Bayern showed their depth and attacking power.

By half time the tie was already slipping away from Atalanta, and the second half offered little relief as Bayern continued to dominate.

Atalanta managed a late consolation goal, but the Italian side now face a near impossible challenge in the second leg in Munich.

Bayern, meanwhile, already look like strong contenders to reach the final stages of the competition.

Yamal rescues Barcelona in dramatic finish

In England, Barcelona escaped defeat thanks to a dramatic stoppage time penalty from teenage star Lamine Yamal.

Newcastle had looked set to claim a famous victory when Harvey Barnes scored in the 86th minute at St James’ Park.

The goal sparked celebrations among the home fans who believed their side was on the verge of a historic result.

However, deep into stoppage time Dani Olmo was brought down inside the penalty area, giving Barcelona one final opportunity.

Yamal stepped up and calmly converted the spot kick to secure a 1-1 draw.

The late equaliser means the Spanish champions will head into the second leg in Barcelona with a slight advantage.

For Newcastle, the result was a cruel ending to what had been a determined performance on one of the club’s biggest European nights.

Second legs promise more drama

With several ties still hanging in the balance, the return matches promise even more drama.

Liverpool must overturn their deficit at Anfield, Tottenham need a miracle in London, and Newcastle will travel to Spain hoping to complete a memorable upset.

Bayern Munich, however, already appear to have one foot firmly in the quarter-finals after their dominant display.

As the Champions League knockout stage continues, the race to be crowned Europe’s best club is only getting more intense.
