The South African music industry is buzzing after reports surfaced that rapper Musiholiq has parted ways with Inkabi Records, the label founded by hip hop heavyweight Big Zulu.

The alleged split has quickly become a talking point among fans online, especially because Musiholiq was only recently welcomed into the Inkabi Records stable. What was meant to be a promising new chapter for the KwaZulu-Natal artist now appears to have ended sooner than many expected.

A short-lived partnership

Musiholiq, whose real name is Ncazelo Mtolo and who hails from Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal, was introduced as one of Inkabi Records’ newest signings not long ago.

According to reports, the partnership did not last long. Musiholiq is said to have left the label within months of the announcement. The departure reportedly stems from claims that the artist felt overlooked and unsupported during his time with the company.

Sources suggest he believed the label’s focus was directed toward other artists, leaving him feeling sidelined despite being part of the roster.

Inkabi Records and its influence

Inkabi Records was established by Big Zulu, one of South Africa’s most recognisable hip-hop figures. Over the past few years, the label has built a strong reputation in the industry, nurturing several artists and helping push their music to national audiences.

Projects connected to the Inkabi brand, including collaborative releases and the Inkabi Nation movement, have become a major part of the modern South African music scene. The label’s artists have also helped blend traditional Zulu musical influences with contemporary hip hop and maskandi sounds, giving the brand a distinctive identity.

Because of that influence, any news involving Inkabi Records often attracts strong reactions from fans.

Fans react online

Social media users have been weighing in since the reports began circulating. Many fans expressed surprise that the partnership ended so quickly, especially given the excitement when Musiholiq first joined the label.

Others have pointed out that the music industry can be complex for new signings. Some artists thrive under big labels, while others eventually choose to move independently if they feel their creative path or career growth is being limited.

What comes next for Musiholiq?

Despite the reported fallout, Musiholiq still has a foundation in the industry. The rapper has collaborated with established artists before and has built a small but loyal following.

Observers say the situation could ultimately become a turning point for the Umlazi musician. In South Africa’s fast-moving music scene, many artists have successfully rebuilt momentum after leaving labels and forging their own direction.

For now, neither Musiholiq nor Inkabi Records has publicly confirmed detailed reasons for the reported split. What is clear is that the story has sparked conversation across the local music landscape, reminding fans just how unpredictable the journey behind the scenes of the industry can be.
