Few matchdays in South African football stir the soul quite like the Soweto Derby. On Saturday afternoon, the FNB Stadium felt that familiar weight of history as Orlando Pirates delivered one of their most polished performances in recent years, sweeping Kaizer Chiefs aside with a confident 3 0 victory.
It was a result that did more than settle bragging rights. The Buccaneers climbed to the summit of the Betway Premiership, moving three points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns and sending a strong message about their title ambitions.

Pirates set the tone early
From the opening whistle, Pirates looked like a team playing with purpose. Chiefs barely had time to settle before they were forced onto the back foot, defending two corners within the first four minutes. The pressure paid off almost instantly.
In the fifth minute, Tshepang Moremi announced himself with a superb strike from outside the box. After a loose clearance from a corner, he wrapped his left boot around the ball and buried it into the bottom corner, leaving Bruce Bvuma rooted.
For Chiefs, it was the worst possible start in a fixture where momentum is everything.

Midfield control becomes the Buccaneers’ weapon
Once in front, Pirates tightened their grip on the game. Relebohile Mofokeng and Makhehlene Makhaula controlled possession with a composure that kept Chiefs chasing shadows. Chiefs worked hard to find rhythm, but the Buccaneers dictated the tempo and forced Bvuma into several saves from range.
The second goal arrived six minutes before halftime. Mofokeng threaded a beautifully weighted pass to Oswin Appollis, who finished calmly into the bottom right corner. His composure under pressure made the moment look far simpler than it was.
Appollis almost doubled his tally in stoppage time, flashing another effort just over the bar as Pirates continued to dominate.

Chiefs turn to the bench but find no breakthrough
With his team trailing 2 0 at the break, Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson made bold changes, introducing Thabo Cele and Asanele Velebayi. The shift brought fresh legs, but not enough spark to disrupt Pirates’ momentum.
Ethan Chislett forced a save from Sipho Chaine just before the hour mark, offering a glimpse of hope for Amakhosi. But each time Chiefs advanced, Pirates found a way to regain control.
At the other end, Bvuma continued to be Chiefs’ busiest player, denying Moremi and Mofokeng from distance.
Makgopa seals it as Pirates cruise home
Any lingering hope of a Chiefs comeback vanished in the 78th minute. Evidence Makgopa, who came on as a second half substitute, made an immediate impact. Rising at the near post, he headed home Moremi’s pin point cross to stretch the lead to 3 0 and cap off a complete performance.
By full time, Pirates had registered 15 attempts to Chiefs’ five. Chaine comfortably stopped late efforts from Makabi Lilepo and Wandile Duba to preserve a clean sheet and round off a day of dominance for the Buccaneers.
A derby that shifts the season
The Soweto Derby has a way of reshaping narratives, and this one may prove to be a turning point in the title race. Pirates not only claimed victory, they delivered a performance that signals confidence, structure and ambition.
Chiefs, meanwhile, remain fourth on the table and will need to regroup quickly if they hope to stay within touching distance of the leaders.
For Pirates and their supporters, this was an afternoon to savour. A derby masterclass, a climb to the top of the table, and a statement of intent in a season that still has plenty of story left to tell.
