Why Bafana chose Pachuca as their World Cup home

by nikita.m

A familiar challenge in unfamiliar territory

Bafana Bafana are gearing up for one of their most demanding FIFA World Cup campaigns in years, and head coach Hugo Broos believes their choice of base camp could be the difference between simply competing and genuinely performing.

Their home for the tournament will be Pachuca, Mexico, a city tucked just 85 kilometres from Mexico City. For Broos, this wasn’t a random pick. It was a strategic response to the realities of the group stage, where Bafana face the host nation in their opening match and later take on South Korea, both games played on Mexican soil.

Why altitude mattered

Broos has a unique perspective on Mexican conditions. In 1986, he represented Belgium at the World Cup, experiencing first-hand the physical shock of playing at high altitude. When the 2026 draw placed Bafana against Mexico in the opener, he immediately remembered how challenging those levels of elevation can be for visiting teams.

For him, the key was simple: start adapting early. He didn’t want his players landing in Mexico, travelling elsewhere, and only then trying to adjust. He wanted them settled, grounded, and physically tuned from day one.

How Pachuca became the top contender

After the group draw, Broos met representatives from Pachuca in Washington. They offered their facilities, and he promised to weigh up all options. Several locations were under consideration, but a few elements pushed Pachuca ahead:

Close enough without the chaos

The short 85-kilometre distance from Mexico City was ideal. It offers accessibility without the congestion and noise of a major World Cup host city.

Their facilities checked every box

A recent visit sealed the decision. Broos and his technical team toured the training pitches, the gym, medical facilities, and the wider university campus. Everything aligned with what a national team needs for a high-performance World Cup camp.

As Broos put it, Pachuca provided everything required for proper preparation, from recovery spaces to quality training turf.

Building stability before a historic opener

For South Africans, the opening match carries a sense of déjà vu. Bafana also kicked off the 2010 World Cup against Mexico on home soil, a moment still etched in local football memory. This time, the roles are reversed.

By setting up camp in Mexico weeks before the tournament kicks off, Broos wants his squad settled, acclimatised, and ready for what will almost certainly be a fiery atmosphere in the host nation’s opener.

A home away from home

After reviewing all the options, Broos and his team manager confirmed their decision: Pachuca will be Bafana’s World Cup base.

The coach expressed genuine satisfaction with the environment, emphasising that it’s not just a place to sleep, but the foundation for their entire tournament journey.

With two of their group matches in Mexico, and altitude one of the deciding factors, choosing Pachuca is less about convenience and more about positioning the team to compete at the highest level.

Bafana now have a base they can call home as they prepare for a World Cup that many South Africans hope will mark a new chapter in the national team’s resurgence.
