Safe and effective ways to address persistent hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation can be a real confidence knock, leaving you with uneven skin tone and a constant search for solutions.

But what if you could tackle it safely and effectively? From understanding the causes to exploring proven treatments, let’s dive into the best ways to address persistent hyperpigmentation and get your glow back.

Hyperpigmentation happens when part of your skin darkens in comparison to its natural colour. These patches of discolouration can develop anywhere on the skin but are most often seen on sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck, chest, and arms. It is, however, based on your skin complexion; these areas can appear brown, tan, or black.

As opposed to a suntan which comes and goes, hyperpigmentation tends to be more longstanding, although areas may lighten or fade with time and the right treatment. When you have hyperpigmentation, your skin is telling you something is happening within your body.

As reported by IOL, Dr Alek Nikolic, an aesthetic medical practitioner and founder of SkinMiles, says, “Melanin production is controlled by an enzyme called tyrosinase. When the skin is repeatedly exposed to UV radiation or inflammation, that enzyme becomes more active. Over time, excess pigment accumulates in certain areas rather than distributing evenly.”

The three main triggers

The publication reports three major triggers of hyperpigmentation. They include:

1. Exposure to the sun: Constant daily sun exposure can contribute heavily to hyperpigmentation.
2. 
Inflammation: Often left by acne or even eczema.
3. 
Hormones: This factor is more common for many women. 

If you are experiencing hyperpigmentation, it is advisable to make an appointment with a dermatologist for a skin biopsy.

According to News24, patience is key as you deal with hyperpigmentation. It is important to understand that different types of pigmentation require different timelines.

Being conscious and intentional when it comes to your daily skincare routine also goes a long way. Most importantly, no brightening routine is complete without daily SPF protection.
