A bump in the road for Orlando Pirates
Orlando Pirates’ 14-game unbeaten run in the Betway Premiership came to an end on Wednesday night at FNB Stadium, but the fight for the league title is far from over. Mamelodi Sundowns handed Pirates a 2-1 defeat, setting up a tense closing stretch in the South African football season.
In the aftermath, former sports minister Fikile Mbalula took to X (formerly Twitter) to calm nerves among Pirates supporters.
“Losing is acceptable in a game of football. Sundowns, at their best form, did lose to us in the final of Nedbank. We just lost a match in the competition to win the league. Yesterday was a battle we lost, but we have not lost the war. Up the Bucs!”

Sundowns strike early, Maswanganyi sparks hope
The visitors from Tshwane set the tone in the first half. Brayan León struck twice within four minutes, netting in the 37th and 41st minutes, giving Sundowns solid control heading into the break. Both goals were set up by Nuno Santos, with Aubrey Modiba assisting on the second strike.
Pirates, undeterred, responded immediately after the interval. In the 47th minute, Patrick Maswanganyi unleashed a long-range effort that took a deflection off Teboho Mokoena and beat Ronwen Williams, cutting the deficit and reigniting hope for a comeback.
Despite their spirited fightback, the Buccaneers could not find the equaliser, marking a rare league loss but leaving plenty of positives to build on.
Title race intensifies
Pirates remain at the summit of the table with 38 points, but Sundowns have closed the gap to just three points. With a game in hand, Masandawana could level the standings, keeping the league race thrilling as it heads toward its final stretch.
The attention now shifts to the Soweto Derby next weekend, a fixture that could dramatically influence momentum in the title chase. A Pirates win would reaffirm their dominance in Soweto, while a slip could give Sundowns the psychological edge in the fight for the trophy.
Fans urged to focus on the bigger picture
Mbalula’s message highlights a crucial perspective in football: a single defeat does not define a season. Pirates supporters have rallied behind the club on social media, sharing optimism despite the setback. Many fans point to the team’s resilience, arguing that the squad has shown it can respond under pressure.
“We fight until the last whistle. Sundowns may have won this battle, but the league is ours to decide,” one fan wrote on X.
As the PSL approaches its climax, every match carries weight, and Pirates’ ability to maintain focus—both on and off the field—could determine whether they lift the league trophy this season.
