Galatasaray run riot as Europe’s heavyweights trade blows
The Champions League returned with the kind of drama that reminds us why midweek football in Europe still feels special. From Istanbul to Monaco, giants stumbled, tempers flared and comebacks stole the spotlight.
For South African fans staying up late or catching highlights over breakfast, it was one of those nights that delivered everything.

Galatasaray seize control in Istanbul

If anyone expected a cagey affair at Rams Park, Galatasaray had other ideas.
The Turkish Super Lig leaders dismantled Juventus 5-2 in a breathless first leg that swung wildly before tilting decisively in their favour. Gabriel Sara opened the scoring after 15 minutes, only for Teun Koopmeiners to respond almost immediately. The Dutch midfielder then put Juve ahead before the break, briefly silencing the home crowd.
But the second half belonged to Galatasaray.
Noa Lang restored parity early on before Davinson Sanchez powered them in front. Juventus’ hopes unravelled when Juan Cabal was sent off just 20 minutes after coming on. Lang struck again and Sacha Boey completed the rout, leaving the Italian side facing a daunting second leg.
Luciano Spalletti admitted his team lost composure and character, while Okan Buruk praised both his players and the fans for creating a special night. Still, he urged caution, knowing the job is only half done.
For a club that finished 20th in the league phase to now stand on the brink of the last 16, it is a reminder of how quickly narratives can change in this competition.
Vinicius steps up amid controversy

Over in Lisbon, Real Madrid did what they so often do in Europe. They found a way.
A tense 1-0 win over Benfica was settled by a moment of brilliance from Vinicius Junior, who curled home a superb effort to hand the 15-time champions a narrow advantage. It was his 31st goal in the competition, cementing his place among the great Brazilian scorers in Champions League history.
The match, however, was overshadowed by controversy. Play was halted for several minutes following an alleged racist remark, prompting Vinicius to lead his teammates off the pitch before calm was restored. Later, Jose Mourinho was shown a red card as tensions boiled over.
Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa refused to get carried away, warning that a Mourinho side is never out of the contest. With the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu still to come, Madrid know better than to relax.
Guirassy guides Dortmund through defensive chaos

Borussia Dortmund had every excuse to struggle. Injuries had ravaged their back line and kick-off was delayed after a late arrival at the stadium.
Instead, they delivered one of the more controlled performances of the night.
Serhou Guirassy continued his hot streak, heading Dortmund into an early lead before setting up Maximilian Beier for a second before half-time. Atalanta offered little resistance and now face an uphill task in Italy.
The German side, chasing a place in the last 16 where either Arsenal or Bayern Munich await, showed that momentum in domestic form can translate onto the European stage.
Doue sparks PSG revival

Perhaps the most dramatic storyline unfolded in Monaco.
Paris Saint-Germain were stunned inside a minute when Folarin Balogun struck for the hosts. He doubled the lead soon after, leaving the reigning European champions shell-shocked. Vitinha missed a penalty and Ousmane Dembele limped off injured. It felt like one of those nights.
Then Desire Doue changed everything.
Introduced as a substitute, he scored to pull PSG back into the contest and played a key role in Achraf Hakimi’s equaliser before the break. Monaco’s Aleksandr Golovin was sent off early in the second half and Doue struck again to complete a 3-2 comeback win.
Luis Enrique’s side now return to Paris with the advantage, though the tie remains alive.
A week that could define seasons
As the dust settles, one thing is clear. These play-offs are anything but routine.
Galatasaray have one foot in the next round. Madrid hold a slim but familiar advantage. Dortmund look composed despite adversity. PSG, meanwhile, reminded everyone why depth and resilience matter in Europe.
For fans watching from Johannesburg to Cape Town, this is the stage where reputations are made and seasons are shaped. And with second legs looming next week, the drama is far from over.
