Interesting things you can do with roses (beyond a display)

Do you feel bad throwing roses away when they start to wilt? There are so many things you do with roses other than wait for them to die in a vase. From edible treats to bath soaks, you can extend your blooms’ life in your home.

Roses might be the universal symbol of love and romance, but they’re actually so much more versatile than a display. Whether you have roses in your garden or you’ve been gifted a bouquet, there are many creative ways to make the most of them. Here’s how to give your roses a second life.

Dry them for potpourri

When the blooms wilt, it’s sad to just throw them out. Instead, why not hang them upside down in a dark and cool place to dry. Once dried, crumble the petals in a container and add your favourite essential oils and spices like cinnamon sticks or cloves. This makes a lovely potpourri and adds a romantic touch to your home.

Make home-made rose water

Rose water is timeless and can be used in your beauty routine. It’s soothing and quite hydrating. Simply simmer pesticide-free, fresh rose petals in distilled water. When they’ve lost their colour, strain and cool. You can then use the liquid as a facial mist, a toner or a linen spray. Store it in the fridge so it’s refreshing on warm days.

Make a rose bath soak

If you want to add some luxury to your bath time, rose petals are just perfect. Combine dried petals with some Epsom salts and a few drops of lavender oil. This calming soak will feel spa-worthy – and without the cost.

Create edible rose treats

If you’re using organic roses, you can use the petals in the kitchen. Sprinkle them over cakes and desserts to elevate them to elegance, or infuse sugar with dried petals for a floral sweetener. Rose syrup is great for lemonade, cocktails or just a simple fruit salad.

Press them for art or stationery

Press your roses and use them to decorate handmade cards, framed artwork or bookmarks. Just place the petals between baking paper inside a heavy book for a few weeks. It adds a lovely personal touch for gifts as well.

The takeaway

From home decor to beauty rituals, roses can offer much more than fleeting beauty. With a bit of imagination, these gorgeous blooms can become a sensory and practical delight.
